What Are Sublegends?
Sublegends on keycaps are a quintessential embodiment of the custom keyboard ethos. Their evolution—from practical tools for electronic input and human-computer interaction to expressive elements that convey emotion and seek communal resonance—closely parallels that of custom mechanical keyboards themselves, reflecting a visible design trajectory: from utilitarian functionality toward ornamental artistry.
Classification of Sublegends
Broadly speaking, sublegends fall into two categories: text-based and symbol-based.
Text-based sublegends are the most familiar to enthusiasts, including Japanese (Hiragana), Korean (Hangul), and Russian (Cyrillic) characters.
Symbol-based sublegends often draw from computing, mathematics, or tool-themed inspirations. For example, TUTKEYS’ Aier keycap set features Adobe Illustrator shortcut symbols as sublegends—a design inspired by creative software workflows. With its milky white and vintage warm gray base, accented by colorful highlights, the set delivers a fresh, minimalist aesthetic that pairs beautifully with cream-white or anodized silver keycap kits.
